the lamanites come up against the nephites again and again. 

when the nephites are faithful, they win and when they are not, they don't. 

verse 13 is great! it is so poignant and blunt.   kind of sums it all up -

13 And because of this their great wickedness, and their boastings in their own strength, they were left in their own strength; therefore they did not prosper, but were afflicted and smitten, and driven before the Lamanites, until they had lost possession of almost all their lands.

this is one of the things i have struggled with and am trying to overcome. when i start to think i am pretty smart, i have a little talk with myself and remind me how i got to where i am and who put me there and that i would like to not be left to my own strength.
